Visit Cahir Castle beside the River Suir
Cahir Castle occupies a rocky island in the River Suir. Built in the 13th century and associated with the Butler family, it was captured by Essex in 1599. It makes a useful contrast with the Rock of Cashel: here the focus is a fortress, while Cashel's surviving skyline is largely ecclesiastical. Combining them gives you two different kinds of medieval monument without treating every tower as part of a royal castle.
Decide whether you want to enter the castle or simply see it from outside. The tours offered here include both approaches, so that distinction matters more than a title listing several castles. For an independent journey, use the transport and driving guide; for a driver and guide, see the private tour comparison.

Castle entry, prices and seasonal hours
The base admission rates are EUR 5 for adults, EUR 4 for seniors or the group tariff, EUR 3 for children and students, and EUR 13 for a family. Guided visits are listed. Coach groups need advance arrangements. Allow for uneven paths and edges inside the monument; access is restricted in places and only assistance dogs are permitted.
In January and February the castle opens from 09:30 to 16:30, with last entry at 15:45. From March to 25 May it opens from 09:30 to 17:30, last entry 16:45. From 26 May through August, hours are 09:00 to 18:30 and last entry is 17:45. September to mid-October returns to 09:30 to 17:30, last entry 16:45; late October through December uses 09:30 to 16:30, last entry 15:45. Check the October changeover for your date. The castle closes from 24 to 30 December.
The twelve-hour day trip from Dublin and the ten-day small-group journey include Cahir Castle admission. The private eleven-hour itinerary includes accommodation transfers in Dublin, a private guide and Rock of Cashel entry, but Cahir is an outside sightseeing stop. Castle tickets are an optional extra on that product. Choose the admission-inclusive journeys if entering Cahir is central to your plans.
Swiss Cottage
Swiss Cottage is a separate visit: an early 19th-century cottage ornΓ© created for Richard Butler. Its 2026 season runs from 12 March to 4 November, from 10:00 to 18:00, with last admission at 17:15. Interior visits are guided, in arrival order, with a maximum of twelve people per tour. Leave room for waiting rather than planning arrival at the final admission time.
Access is exclusively through Cahir on the R670 rather than the R668. Interior photography is prohibited, the building lacks a lift, and only assistance dogs are allowed. Coach groups of ten or more need advance arrangements, and coaches are not accepted after 12:00 on Sundays or statutory public days off. Plan Cottage admission separately from the castle trips offered here.
Holycross Abbey
Holycross Abbey is a restored medieval Cistercian abbey on the Suir and an active parish church. Many features belong to its 15th-century rebuilding. Restoration took place from 1970 to 1975, with reopening on 5 October 1975. Religious services and events remain part of its present use, so treat it as a living church as well as a heritage stop.
Sunday tours run at 14:30 from March through September without advance booking. Other tours can be arranged throughout the year with 48 hours' notice; the stated donation for 2026 is EUR 5. Events may affect arrangements. For tour enquiries call +353 86 1665869 or +353 504 43124. For the Cashel part of a combined day, consult the Rock's seasonal opening hours.
